AI Investment Decision Checklist

A one-page test for any AI proposal, before it reaches the board. If a proposal cannot clear these, the appropriate next step is usually more direction — not more activity.

Direction

  • We have agreed what this initiative is meant to strengthen about the business.
  • It supports where the business is going — not only what is currently possible.
  • We could explain the decision without using the word “AI”.

Distinctive value

  • It strengthens something we are especially well positioned to provide.
  • It is not simply commonly available capability rebranded as strategy.

Evidence

  • We have separated verified information from assumption and interpretation.
  • We know which assumptions, if wrong, would change the decision.
  • We know what still requires specialist validation before commitment.

Readiness & timing

  • The organisation can realistically support this now.
  • We have considered whether it should be deferred rather than declined.
  • We know the smallest next step that would reduce the biggest uncertainty.

The honest test

  • If AI is not the right answer here, we are prepared to say so.
  • We know who owns the decision — and who owns the consequences.
